In December 2008 Maddie was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, Which is a Kidney Disorder. Maddie was started on High doses of steroids which by March she had become resistant to. At this time Sarah stopped working to dedicate more time to Maddie's health needs.
In April Maddie was started on low dose chemotherapy for 9 weeks with the hope of her going into remission, but sadly this was not to happen. Maddie was getting more unwell when in June 2009 Adam was made redundant from his job, bringing more pressue to the family. At the same time Cyclosporine,a very tocix chemotherapy drug was started as well as large doses of diuretics to keep the guild from building up
